Achieving a better work-life balance is high on many people’s list of priorities nowadays, and one group that’s particularly concerned about it, is recent graduates.
A 2016 study, reported in the Independent, showed that half of 18- to 24-year-olds say work-life balance is their main career goal. And four in ten young people want an employer that can offer them a career as well as help them build a family.
For young people, getting a better work-life balance is not just important— it’s everything.
Time to take note
Considering that these young people will soon make up the majority of the workforce, it’s down to employers to sit up, and take note.
The question is, what can employers do to encourage a better work-life balance?
Thankfully, there are answers. For example, here are three fairly simple behaviours that employers can cultivate in their workforce to give everyone a better work-life balance.
1. Make sure people use their holiday time
On paper, it might sound like good news to employers that their people aren’t making the most of their holiday allowance. But, in reality, people need their holiday in order to relax and recuperate. And an exhausted employee is neither happy, nor productive.
2. Get people to switch off from their devices (especially their smartphones at night)
Many people find it difficult to get away from work because they take it home with them on their smartphones. And if you’re still looking at your phone when in bed, it can ruin a good night’s sleep. That’s why it’s important for employers to persuade staff to leave their work where it belongs — at work.
3. Emphasise the importance of planning and a good 'to do' list
One way for employers to make sure their people don’t take their work home with them is to help people organise their time better at work. A few hours training on how to manage their time could save many more hours in wasted time.
