They’re setting a high standard in sustainable FM

It’s good to know that 14forty’s ultimate parent, Compass Group PLC, is a member of the FTSE4 Good Index Series. This is an independent organisation that measures the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards.

It’s good to know too, that they’re a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact. That means they’re committed to taking action to support and uphold its principles of business integrity, human rights and the environment.

They’re also a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index – the first global sustainability benchmark. It assesses companies' strategies on corporate governance, economic performance and impact on the environment.

14forty and Compass Group UK & Ireland have taken some really big steps to consolidate their supply chain. That’s made some impressive reductions in carbon emissions which of course reflects well on us too.

They are consolidating a number of core suppliers to make deliveries through a single supply route - slashing 300,000 deliveries and carbon emissions by 4,500 tonnes per year - receiving an Environmentally Friendly Logistics Award for minimising its impact on the environment.

Responsible sourcing is vital for sustainable FM

If everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK, we’d need three planets to support us. That’s not sustainable. But we’re playing our part as a business to do something positive about it – and so are 14forty in the way they support us.

To begin with, all their ingredients and products are sourced from approved suppliers and are fully traceable. That makes sure that sustainable, ethical and safety standards are built in and followed.

Then they’re offering more and more Fairtrade products. That’s popular in our restaurant, deli and coffee shop.

So we’ve introduced the Eatfair range of flapjacks, cookies, cakes and muffins. And it’s the best way of helping to make sure that growers and their families get a fair price and decent working conditions with 5p donated from every item sold going to help and support them.

14forty support British sourcing, too. They work with local farmers and growers. We can see it in the fresh fruit and vegetables that come into our kitchens every day.

It all makes good environmental sense – and good business sense too.

Lower environmental impact – real CO2 savings

We work hard to reduce any adverse environmental impact in our business. The work that 14forty do in this area is a great way of cutting it down still further. Since we started working with them, we’ve been steadily cutting down our emissions – really helpful for our annual Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) submission.

Take cleaning, for example. Their eco-friendly equipment uses much less water and electricity than we were consuming before. Fewer chemicals and less packaging too.

All our offices now have centralised recycle points. It’s a really simple but effective way to manage and stream our waste – as well as keeping the place clean and tidy.

All of this and a lot more is underpinned by our ISO14001 accreditation. 14forty played a big part in helping us prepare for and achieve this. And it’s supported by all the training they provide in key areas like minimising waste, water and energy efficiency.

Supporting society and local communities

Sustainable FM is about supporting society as well as responsible sourcing and looking after
our environment. So it’s good to know that 14forty’s parent Compass Group has raised over £1million for their chosen charity Cancer Research UK since 2009 – and 14forty have played a big part.

It’s also good to see the results of their community investment programme. Closer to home, 14forty work with us to support our own initiatives to be good neighbours and actively support our local communities.
